Note to Leaders: Every small group is different, so we are providing a summary study with additional resources in the Going Deeper section. Please choose the questions that relate best to your particular group.

Starter:  Have you ever known someone who suffered a tragedy and turned away from God?  Would you mind sharing some of their story?

Engage and Connect

  • Read Galatians 6:7-8.
  • Have you seen someone reap what they sowed in a negative way and then blame God?  In your opinion, why did they blame God?  What was their thinking?
  • Read James 1:2-4.
  • In your opinion, what are the most common ways God tests us today?  How would you advise someone to pass the test?
  • What kind of mysterious suffering/evil has entered your life?  Tragedies? Sicknesses? What were your thoughts toward God?
  • If God gave you the answer to the question “why?” how would you feel?
  • Read Job 42:5-6.
  • After Job encounters God, he says he knows his place.  How would you express this someone?  How would you explain our place before God?
  • Read Romans 8:28.
  • In your opinion, what is the best way to claim this promise in the middle of suffering/evil?

Prayer:  Father, I confess much of my suffering happens because of my own poor choices.  Please forgive me.  Whenever testing comes, give me strength and grace to stay faithful to you.  When I encounter what I cannot understand, please send me reminders that you are with me and you can bring good in all things.  I ask in the name of the one who change bad to good when he rose from the dead, Jesus, Amen.
